I like, not liking Pleasantville. I am moping because everybody keeps saying I don’t like it because I don’t get it.

Summary:
We enter the Pleasantville of the early 50’s in black and white. Why, because it’s about a kid’s obsession with a Leave it to Beaver style sitcom that was made before colored TV was invented? No. The black and white of Pleasantville is symbolic of the oppressive restrictiveness a uniform society that does not tolerate individuality and diversity. The relative comfort and ease of middle class America is ironically stifling the opportunity to enjoy a rich and fulfilling life. The appearance of being uniformly correct is more important than having a life of substance. For example, the books carried by high school students look proper but have no text to enrich their lives.

As people begin to take risks, test and overreach the boundaries of societal prohibitions, and venture into areas previously thought taboo; they find themselves experiencing a more lucid and rewarding life. They have broken the societal bonds that shackled them to a dispiriting automaton existence. Their live’s gain color. They are happy and free.
