Jim, Re: <I never would have thunk it...>

The only reason I thunked it was that I looked at UMC a while ago as an investment -- and decided to pass.

I think of INTC as over valued at a Price/Sales of ~ 7. UMC is ~ 13.

For reference, AMD is 1.1 on both price/book and price/sales.

Jim,

Re: "Market Cap
UMC 22.8B
AMD 3.9B"

Jim, You can always "hope" and "pray" that UMC takes a "stake" in AMD. <ggg>

Jim,

re: AMD buying UMC to ensure technology

Besides the disparity between UMC and AMD market caps.

There are two other major technology partners driving a common process with UMC and AMD {namely IBM and Infineon}.

This development by partnership has major cost advantages.

Unfortunately this type of cooking up a leading edge process via multiple cooks has serious questions on its ability to ship on time. (the good news is that IBM is really doing the bleeding edge work).

regards,

Kash
