Intel Says New Chip Twice as Fast as Previous Version (Correct)

(Restores missing word ``to'' in first paragraph.)

Santa Clara, California, May 28 (Bloomberg) -- Intel Corp., which is trying to sell chips used to run the most powerful corporate networks, said a new processor for server computers will be 1.5 to two times faster than its predecessor.

The world's largest chipmaker's Itanium 2 chip is expected to go on sale in July. The processor will enable companies to as much as double the speed at which transactions are processed or support twice as many computers as the previous Itanium, said enterprise marketing manager Shannon Poulin.

The first version of the Itanium, which went on sale two years behind schedule, hasn't sold well as Intel faces tough competition from International Business Machines Corp. and Sun Microsystems Inc. Itanium represents Intel's attempt to enter the market for chips used in the most expensive and powerful servers.

The price for the Itanium 2, previously code-named McKinley, hasn't been announced, though it will be similar to the previous version, which cost $4,226 per unit in 1,000-unit quantities, Poulin said.
