GV, <Again, principle takes a back seat.>

I guess you're right about that. Too bad this sort of behavior is rewarded by the majority of Americans, no matter which side of the fence they are on.

GVTucker:

I'm a big Bush supporter, but I was disappointed to read about the Florida lease deal. It clearly was a political move to benefit his brother, and the Administration's reasons for how it is different that ANWR weren't persuasive to me. I personally think drilling should take place in ANWR and in the Gulf - every barrel of oil collected domestically is one that we don't depend on from the mid-East.

Regarding the farm subsidies - I don't believe Bush "advocated" the increases - rather Congress stuffed them into the bill and he signed it. Farm subsidies are a divisive issue between the urban and rural states, but I think there was general bipartisan support for them in the agricultural states.

RE:"In Alaska, the people want oil revenues, so Bush has no problem choosing the oil industry over the environment with the proposed drilling in the ANWR. But in Florida, where the voters are more inclined to the environmental side and where his brother is in a dangerous gubenatorial seat, Bush has no problem taking the exact opposite tack. Today he proposed having the US taxpayers pay $235 million to buy existing oil and gas leases so that environmentally sensitive areas near the Everglades and the panhandle. That's the exact opposite tack as his supposed desire to have us less dependent on foreign oil, but no matter. He needs to buy some more votes in Florida, and this is a way to do it. Again, principle takes a back seat."

Sure it's hypocritical. Nothing new there...goes a lot further than that too.

I want to know WHY they aren't drilling in the ANWR yet?
Maybe they don't want to make some OPEC nations mad.

As for drilling around FL...hey...just goes to show you "all politics is local"...

RE:"But in Florida, where the voters are more inclined to the environmental side and where his brother is in a dangerous gubenatorial seat"

Only in danger because of the changing nature of the Florida population. More liberal by the carload and boatload.
