Cash is sometimes difficult to smuggle into another country. As far as the diamond, I guess it depends on the size. Diamonds and coins are good for escaping to another country when you may not be able to quickly access your stash in Lebanon. Remember, he had been tipped of the arrest just shortly before they nabbed him.
