Hitachi to Raise Chip Output at Western Japan Plant (Update2)

Tokyo, May 30 (Bloomberg) -- Hitachi Ltd., Japan's third- largest chipmaker, plans to resume computer chip production at a plant west of Tokyo to meet an anticipated recovery in global demand for semiconductors.

Hitachi plans to make 9 million chips used in personal computers by the end of September, 2002, up from 6.5 million chips in the six months to March 31, said Yuichi Tanaka, a spokesman for the company.

Hitachi is boosting output to meet an expected rise in demand for chips used in PCs as the industry starts to recover from its worst year. Chip sales in the Asia-Pacific region, excluding Japan, will probably rise by a quarter this year, while global sales will advance 2.3 percent to $142.2 billion, the World Semiconductor Trade Statistics said this week.

Global orders for chipmaking equipment made in Japan rose 26 percent to 112 billion yen in March, the first gain after falling for 14 straight months, the Semiconductor Equipment Association of Japan said in April. Chipmaking equipment sales are often seen as the harbinger of increased production in the chip industry.
