UMCi awards 68 mln usd construction contracts for Singapore 12-inch-wafer fab

UMCi, the Singapore-based joint venture between United
Microelectronics Corp, Infineon Technologies AG and EDBI, said it has awarded a
total of 68 mln usd in contracts for the next construction phase of the
12-inch-wafer facility located in the Pasir Ris Wafer Fab Park.

Of the contracts awarded, Hyflux Hydrochem Pte Ltd, a subsidiary of Hyflux
Ltd won the waste water treatment system contract.

M+W Zander, a subsidiary of the Jenoptik Group, was awarded the clean-room
system contract.

Singapore Oxygen Air Liquide Pte Ltd will provide the gas yard and total
gas supply system, Sumitomo Chemical Engineering Corp Ltd will be in charge of
the central chemical supply system and Vivendi Water Systems/USF will supply
the ultra pure water system.

With completion expected at the end of this year, the Singapore fab is to
have a maximum capacity of 40,000 wafers per month and expects to start
production in the second quarter of 2003 using UMC's 0.13 micron and 90
-nanometre copper/low-power consumption process technologies.
