Hi arun gera; Re that poll of Kashmiris. "On the issue of citizenship, “61 per cent of the people surveyed say they will be better off with India, only 6 per cent favour being with Pakistan, while 33 per cent were undecided. However, the survey has not touched upon the question of independence and how many people favour that as an option."

If the poll results are so heavily in favor of India, why the hell doesn't India simply have free and fair elections on the subject? It would improve India's position with the United Nations &c.

My conclusion: Obviously the poll numbers are incorrect. I'd say that New Delhi Television is full of s#:t. This is a fantasy land poll.

>>>only 6 per cent favour being with Pakistan, while 33 per cent were undecided.<<<

Having spent considerable time in Kashmir (1966-72), the MORI poll doesn't surprise me. Jinnah left a bad taste with the Moslem Valley with his contempt for them (as a lower order) and I heard many echoes of it two decades later.

The poll might have been more useful, however, had it broken down results between Jammu and the Valley.

He's history now, but I thought Sheikh Abdullah--the Lion of Kashmir-- was badly treated by Nehru. There might have been a possibility for autonomy with the Sheikh returned as Prime Minister.
