Why should we give a shit about anyone but ourselves?

BTW, they can always "gift" it before their dead.

Rich people can afford to hire tax accountants to avoid taxes. Just open a Robb Report magazine and look at the ads...

They will read something like: "Make $2M/year and pay taxes like you make $200K/year..."

It is simply unfair to penalixe rich people for dying

I don't have a problem with that, in principle.

Unfortunately we either spent too much or tax too little elsewhere - with the SS bill not even due yet! - so IMO any talk of tax reductions *must* be accompanied with an alternate source of revenue or an equivalent cut in spending.

It's a tough one. At some point we will have to do something about SS and Medicare and that will be one ugly, ugly fight. People will be marching in the streets over those issues.

At some point we either have to give up the myth that this isn't a socialized society and start taxing accordingly, or we need to drastically reduce SS/Medicare.

PS I did see that you provided an alternative in your post

you have a lot of foreign corps that don't pay US taxes by marking up their inputs to their U.S. subsidiaries. those same corps get tax breaks and export subsidies on the other end.

Mike... the entire tax system needs badly to be overhauled. I'm not convinced that the answer is simply a higher corporate tax rate, however. IMO, the best solution is a consumption tax, combined with the repeal of the personal income tax. Not only would this encourage investment and saving contra consumption, but it would have the additional benefit of not threatening individual privacy to the extent that the personal income tax does. I'm sure that the government will find other ways to threaten our privacy, though. -ng-
