That doesn't work anymore. The indian govt in its attempts to "protect" the kashmiris stopped other indians from settling there (I wonder if the Israelis learnt from this and encouraged lot of jewish settlements into the occupied areas - smart folks!); the terrorists/militants terrorized enough hindus into leaving. At this point, there is no chance of a free and fair plebiscite.

William,

No, I was just making a point. No sooner did the British get ready to leave, than these fellows started fighting among themselves and they have been butchering one another ever since.

I agree that a UN-supervised plebiscite is the only way out. Otherwise, a buffer zone has to be established all along the LoC and the IB and have international troops stationed there permanently.

William Hickman

The Kashmiris want to be an independent country. That is what the prince wanted in 1947. But as he was mulling that over, the Pakistani army marched in to force them to merge with Muslim Pakistan. Since then Kashmir has been overrun by Muslims from Pakistan. The Hindu Brahmins have been driven out violently by these folks who immigrated to Kashmir from Pakistan. with this demographic manipulation, does plebiscite by Kashmiris have any meaning. Rather, we can work towards freezing the LoC and move on. And yes, the US has many things going for itself primarily the war against Osama and his folks.

Offer both India and Pakistan a UN supervised plebisite in Kashmir on the desire of the Kashmirians to be independent country

And so does Punjab, Maharshtra, Madras, bengal.

So did the South which started teh civil war.

I think the whole area out there should revert back to BHARAT and be one country again. All the Pakistanis will benefit from the freedoms and prosperity that India offers (compared to Pakistan).

Any Indian (or Bhartai) should be able to move freely within the country including kashmir, acquire assets and settle down. Kashmir will benefit financially since large amounts of funds and commerce will flow in.
