I've been body searched like that in Athens (behind a curtain) and Caracas (in the open). I recall thinking at the time that that would never happen in the US--we were much too civilized.

I also recall from when I was a student in Mexico City how they used to make you check your packages when you went in a store or search them on the way out. I thought at the time (early 60's) that the US was too civilized for that, too.

Apparently not.
