"Had some bird up by the creek early this morning. Never seen it before. Black, about the size of a duck, with a rounded white tip beak. I thought it was a duck at first, or a gull of some kind. Drove right by it and it never moved."

Not too sure RR. Turkey Vulture comes to mind, but they have a reddish head & they will grow to be much larger than a duck.

Perhaps it was an American Coot???
