You know what would be funny? Having all of the ILECs be forced to compete with all of the other ILECs. I'd say that we have 15 different ILECs that could sell in everyone else's territory, without having to own the assets. That would make for some funny court transcript report.

As for your post, you have stated a good forecast. I would be hard pressed to venture to guess at any real direction, future or present. We do know that the ILECs are not overly worried about the cost of their infrastructure and they would opt to use technology that their techs already are trained on and know. Any business would rather use technology that it easy for their staff to work with.

We also know that the ILECs are not going to be going to these companies with their hands out asking for VC funding. We know that the ilec was here last year and will be here next year. We know that the choices they make are not, in all cases, with the competition in mind. We know that they ilecs will have demand for equipment this year, next year and beyond.

But-

I would have to guess that start ups and bk companies are not going to be building networks until every last drop of their current network is used up.

I think we are talking YEARS if not decades before you see any type of real, hard pick up. The killer ap has already been rocked through the market and I can't find another one in the near term.
