<<It is also my belief that India unfairly claimed Kashmir for itself in 1947---it should have been made a UN protectorate. If India would grant the Kashmirians a semblance of automony they might have a chance of keeping ..>>

That is a living proof for the doctrine that many a politicians follow: "If you lie consistent enough, often enough it will eventually be believed as bonafide truth."

Here are the facts about Kashmir (For those who want to know real truth, these facts are verifiable from UN records and other sources)

FYI, only now Muslims are an overwhelming majority in Kashmir. At the time of independce there are about 50 Muslims and about 47% Hindus.

India and even the UN has an obligation not just to Kashmiri Muslims, but also to the Kashmiri Hindus. Even more than the Kashmiris, the Indian government has an obligation to protect more than 160 million Muslims living in India. It is widely believed that, if and when India parts with Kashimir, there will be several million fewer Muslims living in India.

Question, if you are the creator or promotor or supporter of Taliban, Al Queda and Kashmiri Militants, can two of these "causes" be bad while the other is "legitimate" - all at the same time? If the US wants to look at the problem through these lenses, it is draws resentment from India - rightly so.
