I don't question your report of your experience of people being treated more considerately where you are in England than they were where you lived in the US. I suspect, though, that the particular cities involved had something to do with that. I am always amazed at how almost unfailingly nice everyone is to one another in Seattle, and mean to tell a story about that; and also to tell two stories about racial meanness I witnessed recently in my own (NY State) neighborhood.

I'm curious about where you lived in the US, and bet you a pound it wasn't in Seattle! Was it in NY or NJ?
