Terror to blame for tension in S Asia: Vajpayee

MONDAY, JUNE 03, 2002 1:09:01 PM

ALMATY: Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee blamed tension in South Asia on "border terrorism" but did not name Pakistan.

Vajpayee made the remark after meeting Kazakh leader Nursultan Nazarbayev.

"I am glad that tomorrow's summit will also produce a joint declaration condemning international terrorism. We have expressed our hopes that those elements who believe in terrorism and religious extremism should not be indulged and their number should not be allowed to grow."

The conference in Kazakhstan has become a focal point for efforts to defuse tensions between India and Pakistan. Russian President Vladimir Putin and China's Jiang Zemin are expected to play mediator between India and Pakistan.

Putin will hold separate meetings with Vajpayee and Musharraf. And China's official Xinhua news agency on Monday quoted the Foreign Ministry as saying the Chinese President would also meet both men to try to ease tensions.

Putin may try to persuade the two to meet face-to-face -- a possibility all but ruled out by India. Vajpayee told reporters on Sunday "there was no such plan".

Meanwhile, the Pakistani military leader who will arrive in Almaty today, has welcomed such a meeting. He, however, made it clear that he would not renew the offer if Vajpayee kept rejecting it.

Richnorth, Dawn is a Pakistani newspaper publishing for the mass consumption of the Pakistani masses, most of whom are illiterate and worse still very poor. Their poverty has been caused by the squabbles of Pakistani politicals leaders including himself. For its 50 year history, they have been under military dictatorship for almost 40 years. Zulfikar Ali Bhutto (Benazir's father) who was Western educated with Western values was the first democratically elected leader of Pakistan who was assasinated by the military dictatorship of Pakistan. Nawaz Sharif, another democratically elected leader was overthrown and deposed by the current military dictator, Musharraf.

On the other hand, India which was born at the same time as Pakistan, has a very prosperous populace. India has had regular elections, is the largest business partner of the US in the telecom industry and on and on. So for Musharraf to say that the west should work towards removing poverty first instead of fighting terrorism is not kosher. For him to talk about elections in Kashmir when he refuses to vacate his throne and let the people of Pakistan hold their own elections. For him to hold onto power in the name of stability and corruption ridding Pakistan contradicts his demand for what he wants the world to do to fight terrorism and for India to do to solve the Kashmir problem.

India is a democracy and as I understand they will not allow a dictator in Musharraf to dictate and determine the fate of the Kashmiris who themselves are very freedom loving and will not allow the annexation into a dictatorship just because they the Kashmiris believe in Islam.

His Royal Highness, King Abdullah of Jordan also identified problems between Muslims and Jews as a root cause terrorism today.

I think that's why the President sent the Director of the C.I.A., George Tenet to Israel and to the Palestinians. IMO, the President is aware that there can be no peace until there is justice for both sides of the conflict. Once the Palestinians have a world class security force, peace in the region can flourish IMO. Hopefully Lebanon can also be included in the economic prosperity that will follow peace.

IMO, the visit by the Director of the C.I.A. should be taken as sign of respect that the President has for the Palestinians. It is proof to me that the President wants the Palestinians and the Israeli's to be secure in their homes.

Speaking at a banquet hosted in his honour by the Tajikistan President, Emonali Rahmanov, at the State Guest House here this evening, President Pervez Musharraf said the root causes included
outstanding political issues such as Kashmir, Palestine, immense poverty of less-developed countries,
illiteracy
and gap between rich and poor countries.

Lets see, illiteracy breeds poverty. A country can never be rich if it is illiterate.

Most of the money for education goes into muslim religious schools where they are taught to hate instead of basic education.

So the REAL root cause of terror is the religion education period.
