The arrangement of the bits and pieces may be complicated. However, the idea seems to be one of reaching equilibrium. We were discussing the process of adjusting to something that would cause a typical person (not Mary Poppins and the like) to "feel bad," as much as, the state of being well adjusted. The question arose in relation to the idea of "feeling bad." Specifically can the feelings of pain, sadness, shame, sorrow, regret, etc. play into the process of adjusting.
