<The folks consumed with fear now dominate the markets > Consumed with fear? Hardly. The folks dominating the market right now are most assuredly not consumed with fear. They are propogating fears for financial gain. You can't be both scared silly of the world/economy ending on one hand and giggle shit silly about short sell gains on the other. In respect to a lot of the fears being propogated make money/gold/stock the last thing one needs to worry about. Survival skills would be more appropriate. Plus they have no fear of or respect for potential market upside.
