But Arafat's popularity is not high with the Palestinians. His West Bank tour after he got loose from Ramallah was a fiasco. He had to skip Jenin altogether because they burned the speaker's stand. The latest poll of Palestinians shows his support at 35%. Palestinians are starting to ask out loud (remarkable in a thugocracy like the PA) where this intifada is getting them.

I agree, and that's why I think it would be wise of him to resign and take advantage of his enormous popularity in the Arab world, while he still has it. He could regain his standing with the Palestinian people, and he could blame his resignation on Prime Minister Sharon, because of the Prime Minister's personal hatred of him. Chairman Arafat may have to demand that Israel release his interim successor though.

Nadine I hope you were the Prime Minister of Israel since with the view you hold you surely would not be barking up the wrong tree and attacking Arafat as he is doing now.
