I remember an episode in which Reagan had mentioned a particular anti aircraft missile launcher. He had gotten a detail wrong in how the thing was used. Apparently there are shoulder held launchers and ground based launchers and he had it mixed up. At the time I was a Reagan hater. The other Reagan haters made a huge deal out of this fopah. It was in the media for a couple of weeks. I tried in vain to understand why it was important for the commander and chief of the armed forces to know weaponry at this level of detail. It certainly had nothing to do with his politics or leadership ability.

. I remember one person making a big deal out of Reagan's failure to recognize his son Michael, after he had been away at boarding school a few months. It turned out that Reagan has very poor eyesight without his contacts, which he was not wearing on that occasion, and that Michael had grown in the interim.

Actually, the incident took place at the boarding school, at Michael's graduation which Reagan was there to attend, and the two were standing directly in front of each other when the father stuck out his hand, shook his son's hand, and introduced himself.

Perhaps the boy had grown since the last holiday.

BTW, I'd like not to have further discussion of this subject. I haven't discussed the former president since he became ill. Since you raised it, I did feel that the actual circumstances of this incident deserved to be clarified, though.
