I always thought it didn't make any sense to keep it since if there was an outbreak samples would be available, but I suppose if you were dealing with a hybrid the original strain might be useful.

Laz I'm not 100% sure those are the last remaining stocks of the virus. Officially they are but who knows if someone has a hidden supply somewhere for years, or if some virus from one of the official reaming stocks (more likely the Russian supply then the US IMO) was given to or snuck out by someone else.

Can you imagine someone like Saddam Hussien with control of smallpox, or worse yet someone like bin Laden? Now imagine that we have no new supplies for use in creating vaccines or performing research.
