Global chip sales seen rebounding 3.1% this year

Global sales of semiconductor chips are expected to bounce from their worst-ever showing last year to post a modest 3.1-percent rise to US$ 143 billion, the Semiconductor Industry Association said in its mid-year forecast.

The association predicts that sales will rise 23.2 percent to US$ 177 billion next year, and a further 20.9 percent to US$ 213 billion in 2004.

A great deal of uncertainty remains, but increasing sales of cellular handsets, personal computers and digital consumer electronics devices during the next ten quarters will lead the rebound.

And during the next four years, the Asia-Pacific market is expected to become the world's largest in terms of chip sales, passing the Americas.

Sales in the Asia-Pacific region are expected to grow 27 percent to US$ 51 billion this year.
