L.,

<< IF that is really true AND QCOM 6200 chip is the first and it won't really won't sample till Sep AND therefore the handest makers won't be able to get their products out by the J-phone launch which will only start with dual mode of which there won't be nay then how will J-phone start? >>

IF ...

... NEC or Matsushita doesn't have their dual-mode models (with internally developed chipsets) qualified at J-Phone ...

AND ...

... Motorola doesn't ...

AND ...

... Nokia doesn't ...

AND ...

... Sony Ericsson doesn't ...

THEN ...

... J-phone will either have to postpone launch or launch with single mode ('R99 June 01 or later) handsets.

The same applies to Hutchinson 3G, Sonera, and others planning H2 2002 3GSM launches.

Best,

- Eric -

and QCOM 6200 chip is the first

First at what? The Motorola near-zero IF i.300 chipset powers the Motorola A820, a yet unamed handset to be exclusively provided to Hutchison Whampoa for six months and the Siemens' dual mode phones.

Secondly, nobody ever said that the first dual mode phones had to use a single chip set. They can use an existing GSM chipset with a W-CDMA chipset in the same case. Not the cheapest way to go but it can be made to work. The only first about the 6200 is that it will be the first true zero IF dual mode GSM/UMTS chipset and Qualcomm's first GSM product.
