I agree that there is a lot of morally dubious content, and if it were up to me, a lot of it would probably go. However, I am not sure that it is complacency due to economic promises that protects it all, as much as the general proclivity to construe the First Amendment broadly, and conceive of most efforts to restrict content as censorship.

I think you are being unduly negative about people's motivations. IMO, it's just that the internet is a very libertarian place. That's the culture with which it started and the culture continues partly out of tradition and partly because governing it isn't practicable.
