I'm a trader, so I have to keep the phone backup as AT&T dialup access is MUCH more reliable than broadband, but as a trader my situation is not the norm...

So far (over three months) I have had no outages whatsoever with my broadband access.

To be safe though, I too now have a dial-up account as a backup for internet access. Just recently I re-established a dial-up account with a local ISP with whom I used to have an account. It's a long story but they called me and offered me a deal that I simply couldn't resist....unlimited access for $10.00 per month (must be paid one year in advance). To anyone else the cost is $14.95 per month. I have four friends who are also going to take advantage of their offer (through me because I was a previous customer) as soon as their present subscriptions run out.

If I am understanding you, your cost for unlimited access via AT&T is $22.00 per month. I have a friend who used to be with AT&T and he canceled his account as soon as they tried to raise his rate. For that matter, he used to get terrible connections via AT&T. FWIW, here is a link to a site that lists all kinds of ISPs:

thelist.internet.com

I'm pretty sure someone on the list can beat the $22.00 per month you are paying AT&T and provide comparable service.
