I thought the South seceded?

No offense meant. Although I'm a CA boy, have kin from Alabama.

As long as we're telling Friday afternoon stories, I have one about the south. My mother is a geneologist who gives lectures around the country. She was in NARlins (New Orleans to us Yankees) giving a lecture on researching Civil War records. At the end of the talk, various people came up to her to say how they enjoyed the lecture (Southerners are very polite). A very elegant, very old lady came up to my mother and thanked her, and told her how much she enjoyed the lecture. Then, in her most polite southern drawl, (think of a 100 year old Olivia de Haviland reprising her Gone with the Wind role) said: "But, deah, down here it is not called the Civil War. We refer to it as 'The War of Northern Aggression'."

Everything depends on your point of view.
