People rarely change their minds. What they do on SI is they state a position, and then people who agree with them accrete around them, and people who disagree with them accrete around some other nucleus- and the two sides continue to restate their positions.

The outcome is almost always that people believe exactly what they believed before, except they may now think the people on the opposite "team" are even more idiotic than they were initially perceived to be. I think almost all "arguments" on SI can be distilled to this. The foreign affairs thread occasionally presents exceptions to this.
