To say that the Nazi rise to power and subsequent brutality was caused by or assisted by lack of gun ownership is, IMHO, historical revisionism. The German people were in no way ready or willing to rise against the Nazis. Hitler was very powerful, because he was hitting on the following themes:

1) Germany was great before, and can be great again.
2) Germany deserves whatever she can take and hold.
3) Immigrants and foreigners are the dangers to Germany.
4) The rights of the individual are secondary to the rights of the state.

Does any of that sound familiar? Like maybe the rallying cry of Fox News? Lack of gun ownership is not what could potentially push us towards totalitarianism. Some of the knee jerk right wing post-Sept 11th garbage is.
