Our society promotes violent solutions, because they are generally quick solutions. From Afghanistan to Rambo, we are a nation that wants to see "justice" (which means to us, what we want and expect) meted out quick and Dirty Harry style. The heroes of our culture are violent men. It is no wonder we have a violent culture.

You're right.

There is almost nothing in our culture which celebrates the art of solving problems peacefully. Out whole history as a nation is one of getting what we want by force -- from taking the land from the natives to taking our freedom from England to taking Texas from Mexico to defeating slavery by war. The only peaceful acquisions of land we engaged in were the Louisiana Purchase, for which Jefferson was derided, and Seward's Folly. We don't celebrate those in our national consciousness as triumphs the way we do the battles.

Oh, yes, we did negotiate the boundary dispute with England over who would own the San Juan Islands. We had a dispute, we got into a war (in which the only casualty was a pig), we submitted the dispute to national arbitration, and we abided by the decision. You did study this in your history, I'm sure, and celebrated it as the appropriate way to solve international problems. Right?
