I'm sorry, Mike, I've gotta disagree on both points. The net result will be people not working the incredible hours and making the heroic efforts, which will result in a dramatic drop in innovation, productivity, and survivability at these small companies. You'll see a lot more stodgy big companies that don't have to worry about little up-and-comers, and more Microsoft monopolies.

And if the success in software companies has to do lower cost of entry, why can't any other region reproduce the software success of SV? I've heard the argument about 'low cost of entry into software', and I'm sorry, I've just got to laugh out loud. How many billions have been poured into abortive software ventures by cash rich but non-innovative companies that bellied over under the weight of their own budgets. SV software success has nothing to do with initial cash outlay, and all to do with the leverage of stock options wielded in the correct fashion.

Unless you've lived it, on both the up and downside, it is hard to explain.
