The Arab area of the world is the most recent. The Arabs are today where Europe was 300 to 400 years ago. Then Europe also had monarchies who commissioned armadas to go and look for foreign lands and colonialize them. And toward there are the European democracies who, betas me why, are willing to pay taxpayer monies to retain their monarchies for ceremonial purposes. In the case of Russia, we had the Czar overthrown by the Communists and now hopefully democracy is taking roots under Putin.

The Arab world had their first taste of democracy under Nasser of Egypt. The others are still ruled by kings or dictators (ever heard of a Arab Queen?) It will take some time for the monarchies to go. But what we see now is a battle royal for the control of who is going to take over after the monarchies go. Osama and his band of terrorist thugs want to be on the leading edge of that wave. The Wahabi brand of Mulim fundamentalism are in the final stages of survival. Sensing that they are on the way out, they have resorted to their extremist tactics. Seeing that the Paletenians have been shunned (Jordan, Egypt etc.), the fundamentalists are rallying arounf their cause to incite the masses. That is why I do not view this as a war of Muslims against Christianity, the war of poverty against rich societies, the war of the Kashmiris against Indian oppression, the war of the Abu Sayyaf forces etc. It is the same war and the democratic nations need to rally behind the more moderate Muslims who themselves want freedom from monarchies, freedom from dictators (Saddam, Gaddaffi etc.)
