The fighting Egypt has been engaged in has been primarily in the sparsely occupied and undeveloped Sinai

"Sparsely occupied"? Perhaps after Israel drove a million and a half people out in the War of Attrition. The point is that the need to maintain a large military force for self-defense against Israel's attacks was a burden on the economy.

Nasser's socialist economic policies were also the opposite of the successful economic policies of South Korea.

South Korea succeeded with large trade barriers and a centrally-planned economy, like Japan.
