STOCK ALERT - UMC lower on weaker US chips despite foreign investor interest
-- AFX - Asia, 6/12/2002

United Microelectronics Corp was down 0.10 twd at 41.90
on volume of 10.02 mln shares in line with its weaker ADRs and losses sustained
by semiconductor shares on NASDAQ overnight, dealers said.

The fact that foreign investors bought a net 7.10 mln UMC shares yesterday
against a net sale of 8.31 mln shares in Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co
Ltd failed to make much of a difference, an analyst with a local house said.

"One should not expect things to turn out otherwise at a time when
technology shares are bound to remain under pressure for the foreseeable
future."

TSMC was down 0.50 twd at 73.50 on 6.71 mln shares.
