SAN JOSE -- Demand for processed wafers is expected to rise on a quarter-by-quarter basis throughout 2002, but chip makers have already begun to lower their forecasts for these products amid the ongoing slump in the IC sector, according to a survey released by the Fabless Semiconductor Association (FSA) today.

The FSA survey indicated that worldwide wafer demand increased by 3% in the first quarter of 2002, as compared to the fourth quarter of 2001. The results “show signs that the worst may be over and indicate that wafer demand will increase steadily in the remaining quarters of 2002,” according to the FSA survey.

The respondents for the survey, including fabless design houses and integrated device manufacturers (IDMs), project that overall wafer demand will be 21% in the second quarter of 2002, 19% in the third quarter, and 17% in the fourth quarter, according to the FSA.

“Although returning respondents [in the survey] expect a steady increase in the four quarters subsequent to 1Q 2002, they have made gradual downward revisions in their quarterly estimates,” according to the FSA. “Similarly, downward revisions were also recorded for the 2003 annual estimates,” they said.

Fabless chip makers project that wafer demand will increase 54% and 55% in 2003 and 2004, respectively. IDMs believe that wafer demand will jump 35% and 29% in 2003 and 2004, respectively, according to the FSA.
