Stan and all, does anyone know what this means? >The respondents for the survey, including fabless design houses and integrated device manufacturers (IDMs), project that overall wafer demand will be 21% in the second quarter of 2002, 19% in the third quarter, and 17% in the fourth quarter, according to the FSA.<

21% of what?

WILLOW GROVE, Penn. -- Kulicke & Soffa Industries Inc. today announced a new business model for its probe-card wafer test operations--a move that will result in an undisclosed amount of job cuts and plant closings.

As part of the plan, the chip-equipment giant will implement a "copy exact" initiative and a common set of design tools in the probe-card arena, said Alex Oscilowski, K&S's president.

"This new model for our wafer test business will help K&S provide `best in class' customer service, maintain a leadership position in test interconnect solutions, and achieve maximum sustainable growth," he said in a statement.

However, the company also expects to incur a charge in the June quarter for the resulting staff reductions and facility consolidations, according to K&S of Willow Grove.

K&S plans to consolidate of multiple U.S.-based cantilever and vertical probe card manufacturing facilities, including Gilbert, Arizona; Austin, Texas; and San Jose. This company will consolidate its Taiwan-based manufacturing operations into the Hsinchu. No changes are expected in its European operations at this time.
