But, having said that, that doesn't undermine the nationalist argument. Most such wars are funded by other states wishing, for whatever reasons, to cause trouble. If it were not so funded, it would be remarkable, and, I would guess, almost without precedent

True enough, but not an adequate description for all the Pal. groups. 'Nationalism' does not accurately describe the ideology of Hamas and PIJ. Those orgs are truly ideological soulmates of al Qaeda, in the PIJ's case, literally a sister org. to Muslim Brotherhood, which merged with al Qaeda last year. And the PLO has adopted more and more of the Islamist program.
