" Do you seriously believe that religious people stopped praying because the USSR declared itself secular??? And then they suddenly became religious again when the Soviet Union fell apart? That's pure nonsense.... Did you ever wonder why the the USSR and other communist governments are officially secular??? My answer is because the organized religions,eg the Catholics in Russia, were historically too strong a political force and would have been too much competition for the commies.......the solution, ban organized religion!! It doesn't take too much of a stretch to see the parallels here in this country what with the Religious Right's attempts to take over political control of the government. If that were to happen there is no doubt we would lose some of the freedom and rights we now enjoy. One doesn't have to look very far to see the effects of religious power in government, eg the Taliban....
