With increasing competition between cultures and religions throughout the world it's becoming increasingly problematic whether the American/Western model will be the superior one. In fact, the machinations of the present US government (I have to come back to that, sorry) give the clue that the US is losing a great deal of self-confidence in its ability to dominate just by simply being the only military/economic super-power. That it actually has to go out and mix itself in regional conflicts shows just how vulnerable it is. And how worried. Because the US claims to be a secular and not a religious country it's very important that its economy always does well because the whole idea is that US materialism and implied "values" are superior to any other. Thus the present bad economy and fall in the value of the USD has serious repercussions. While the US was in competition with the USSR the apparent superiority of capitalism plus the freedom to worship as one pleased showed its superiority to pure materialistic socialism, particularly as the West became increasing socialist, to please the workers where necessary. Concern with "human rights" also brought tactical advantages but that now seems to have been exposed as a bye-product of "liberalism" (the bad kind). Because Islam, especially radical Islam, is now giving the US a great deal of trouble, this shows that the Judeo-Christian mythology is planted deep within the "secular" American psyche and that the US is having a serious problem adapting to its new religious rival. In fact, the present war against "terrorism" appears to be more of a war against terrors which lurk deep within the psyche of the US leadership. Indeed, it appears to be a delusional paranoia rather than an actual conflict against demonstrable combatants because the US cannot take on, militarily, nearly 1.5 billion people simply because they worship God differently. Clearly, and not to its advantage, the US has embroiled itself in the same never-ending conflict against Islam as has Israel. So, in the circumstances, I return to your statement, "I am hesitant to view growing minorities in the US as invading tribes", because it is clear that the smallest of all the US minorities, 6 million people in fact, has succeeded in dominating and controlling the United States of America. So much for the Bill of Rights.
