The reason I believe that the reff was correct in pulling the red card on Pinto, was once again intent. (At least imo). He really looked mean going after the Korean player...

Once you allow plays like this in an important game charged with emotions is that it will get out of hand in a hurry, worse, serious injuries could come out of these plays. SO the ref HAD to impose order to a team that seemed completely frustrated. The second red card was the result of a SECOND yellow card...

Portugal had the elements to win, they simply did not use them. I will admit that they were rather unlucky in many of them, Gomes missed from less than 5 meters and then I remember a ball hitting the post in the 89th minute, off of Conceicao's foot that would have equalized the game. I will also say that Korea's goal, although very spectacular with a magnificent display of ball control by Park, the Korean striker, the reality should have been that Baia could have stopped that ball... nevertheless, a goal is a goal. Korea got one and Portugal none.

What strikes me the most about Korea is their speed and in the weather they are playing, it is even more amazing --not to mention the "home advantage" in essence, they are playing with 12 players (the home crowd). The same applies to Japan, who I find an even better team.

>On the other hand, the referee's straight red card to the Portugal player seemed a little overdone.

IMHO, I disagree. I think this referee did a masterful job today! Actually, the only mistake he did was to give that foul to the Portuguese in which Figo barely missed. Absolutely no question about the red cards! Pinto's tackle was a Bruce Lee move...the worst of it was he did right in front of the ref, no hesitation, we don't need this crap in this game and at this level...the second one, well it was two worthy yellows for Bento who should have known better...It comes down to this for these Portuguese primadonas "They should have known better", they were lucky to escape with only a one goal loss.

Which brings me to my brief review of this group:

Thread, we are watching something historic here. This S. Korean team can flat out PLAY the game! They were the best team of this group, if they had better finishers they would have won the group even easier! This Dutch coach has them playing a very attractive style. You combine it with their extraordinary physical shape, some incredible confidence they are showing, awesome team unity and loyalty (every time their scorer goes and jumps in his coach's arms, I think other teams' players don't even talk to their coach, let alone hug them!) and INCREDIBLE crowd support and they are writing history. I think they can make dog soup out of the Italians who look half dead.

USA: Well, they are in but in a somewhat disappointing fashion. They played a great game against the Portuguese. They played a great game against the Koreans and almost won (in retrospect, heck that was a great accomplishment!). But a truly awful performance against a resurrected Polish team who proved that they at least belong. Now it is time to redeem themselves against the Mexicans, should be a classic game to watch. Too bad one CONCACAF team has to go. I think the Mexicans will stick it to us simply because we make too many defensive mistakes...but hey you never know.

Portugal: Awful against the US, great against the Polish, and truly dead against the Koreans. To commit the red card mistakes was criminal! They showed some life in the end and almost scored but it was too late, well, they should have come out for a win and not let the stupid delay crap in their game. Good riddance. US did not get beat by the Koreans, they deserved to advance, albeit with a bitter taste in the last game.

Poland: Well they scored first two quick goals, they packed it in the defense and dangerous counterattacks, with six new players in the lineup maybe their coach should have started them, oh well, shoulda coulda, woulda...Sayonara.

Bring cervezas and tacos and vamos a la playa

Forza USA, we are underdogs again<g>
