Don't forget San Mendieta, who made the final penalty - a pretty high-pressure situation - look easy.

I though Spain had some solid moments, and if the Irish had been a little less efficient with the offside trap the score would surely have run higher. If you look carefully at that run of offside calls on the Spanish, it wasn't Raul and Morientes straying forward as much as it was well-timed forward moves by Irish defenders throwing them off. Dangerous game, but they made it work.

Damien Duff was inpressive - expect a move to a big-money team shortly - but the Irish didn't show much in the finishing department.

It looks like Italy may be missing Nesta for the S. Korea match, and Cannavaro will certainly be out (suspension). That's a major factor; those are two very strong defenders. Italy could still pull it off, if they play up to their potential. They will have to spread the game out, slow it down, and control the ball to neutralize the Korean speed. Can they do it? Yes. Will they do it? Another question entirely.

It seems that the Germans are already declaring themselves through to the semifinal, as they think they will easily beat either Mexico or the US:

I hope Mexico goes through (sorry, but I just think they're a better team) and kicks German butt.

Another comment on the fatigue issue: Aguirre (Mexican coach) thinks it's a major factor dragging down the teams with a lot of players in the big European leagues. Cites the example of Luis Figo having to arrive in training for Portugal only 48 hours after the Champions league final...

I hope Brazil gets past Belgium without suffering injury... the Belgians have been playing a bit on the nasty side, and I'd hate to see someone like Rivaldo or Ronaldo knocked out by an ugly tackle. I'm looking forward to seeing them stomp England, but this is not a tournament where anything can be taken for granted.

It might be noted that both Ronaldo and Rivaldo missed much of the regular season with injuries. They may be peaking at just the right time for Brazil. They have been hitting the net, and that pair, in form, would be a nightmare for any defense.
