Yes, lorne. I agree. I am a Hindu. But my best friends are Muslims. These are the progressive Muslims. They are changing with the times. I am sure there are many such progressive Muslims. There is a very strong American Muslim movement. Every year they have a big convention on the banks of the river Delaware in downtown Philly.

The Muslim religion is at its crossroads. It is the youngest of all religions and hence they are at that point in history where other older religions have been there already some 500 to 600 or so years ago. You have the Muslims who are very cultural such as Egypt (Hosni Mubarak and his types), Jordan (King Abdullah who will easily pass for a Westerner with his British accent and love for and practice of Western sports that Prince Charles indulges in), Morocco's King Hasan. Now they are all Muslims too. But they have a different brand which has evolved with the times. However they have preserved the core teachings of the Prophet with regard to faith in God etc.

Now about the Hindus. Hinduism is not a religion but it is a philosophy and way of life. But ancient Hindus worshipped idols. And it was against idol worship that Prophet Muhammed came out. In fact he said that his religion was an offshoot of Judaism and Christianity but it was against the practice of idol worship, which I interpret as against the Hindu religion. Hence India had to bear the brunt of Muslim attacks in the past and even today from Pakistan. And again, India is different than Pakistan. In keeping with the Hindu philosophy which teaches tolerance, you will soon see the next President of India is a Muslim. This guy is an architect of India's nuclear program and hates Muslim Pakistan to the core. In fact Musharraf is Indian born and raised and he visited his family home in India when he paid a official visit to India two years ago.

So yes Muslim religion is at a crossroad. We cannot lump all of them together. There are a lot of moderate Muslims, who I seriously believe are held hostage under the threat of death. And I am sure that we all will be able to rescue it from the extremists.
