I would have interpreted it the same way that you have. There were bedouins in those days, with no steady dwellings, no good place to cook (that is eating pork is forbidden). Might is right was the rule of the day then. I have also been told that the Prophet prohibited his sketches to be made lest it falls in enemy hands and he could be killed. So it was war out there at that time. And out of that violence the religion was formed to seek stability and no idol worship. But in modern times, the followers, the moderate ones have sifted those out.

A Muslim friend of mine in the US is very anti-Saddam since acording to him he is a violent man and so violent that he attacked Muslim Kuwait.
