Mr Mark,

win98se. That could be part of the problem. That along with all the "tinkering" I've done recently is sure to have helped, lol.

I've run windoctor and no problems were noted. I completed the diskscan using the win app. I tried using NDD again to see what would happen. Same as before, It would proceed to around 57-60% complete until that dangged write message would start. Third try I started a end task routine to see if stopping some of the background programs would give a hint of what was writing... Out of the 19 bg-apps, I got down to explorer and systray and the writing was still happening. NDD would cycle between partition and boot for some time with the ' starting due write to disk...'. I noticed that the winapp seems to pause and then continue from where it was interrupted. Nortons' diskscan seems to restart at block 1 when the write to disk happens and then just recycles due to the disk write.

I doubt that the problem is the Norton program. I'm sure it's something I've done to have caused the problems. It's like everything else, I get professional help after I try to fix something ;-) I think that the hardware is ok, I just have a pesky software program that can't keep its mouth shut ;-)

Have another question...

From the msconfig window, there is a (startup) entry named 'QD FastAndSafe' with no associated file or path shown. I've tried a find for the name and didn't find anything... Anyway to track what that may be? Or, if someone out there that may know what it is and let me know, it would be appreciated.

Again, thanks for the help!!!
