William, the Kashmir population, at the time of partition consisted of a significant number of Hindus (Kashmiri Brahmins), though they were not a majority. Besides, at that time a significant number of the Muslim majority in Kashmir were very independent minded. Independent minded was also their Hindu king who at first did not want to accede to either India or Pakistan. But the Pakistani army started to advance into Kashmir to force the hands of the wavering Kashmir king. It is under that duress that the king acceded to India and the Indian army proceeded to arrest the movement of the Pakistani army at, which is today, the LoC. So given this history, I do not understand your comment that India tried to steal it fair and square.

Today, we have a band of Muslims, armed to their teeth who have unleashed terror in Kashmir to get things their way. You raise a interesting issue about "freedom fighters" and "terrorists". In my opinion, a movement of the freedom fighters draws its strength from the people whose freedom is at stake. Example Mahatma Gandhi's freedom movement. Had a very strong base in the people. It is such strength that precludes the use of terror and violence. Martin Luther King also adopted the same approach in the civil rights movement when he called for a peaceful resistance to the rule of the authority that they were up against. Nd we had the famous march of the people in Birmingham in response to his clarion call. We had a similar situation with Mujibur Rehman when he sent out a clarion call to his people and did not budge even though he was thrown behind bars. His call was also for peaceful resistance. Nelson Mandela did the same thing with the ANC. Even in Communist Russia, when Boris Yeltsin stood atop a Soviet tank on the streets of Moscow and dared the Russian commander to order the troops to shoot at the large crowd. The Russian commander backed down from a display of violence and did not order his troops to shoot. So a true freedom struggle is one which is devoid of violence since it draws its strength from the people. I doubt if the same thing can be said of the Kashmiri separatists. With the formation of Pakistan. Gandhi, Nehru, Patel, Maulana Azad all recognized the strong movement amongst the section of population which is now Pakistan and agreed to a partition with the Qaid-e-Azam and his men.

So in light of all this, I am of the opinion that the best solution today is freeze the LoC and move on. We cannot dwell on history for if we did then existing political map of the world will have to change. We are encountering a similar situation in the Israeli-Palestenian situation when they are talking about 1967 borders. Such talk will serve as a barrier to any deal to move it forward.
