SAN JOSE -- There are signs that the worldwide IC market is improving--at least according to data from VLSI Research Inc.

In a report issued late Monday, VLSI Research predicted that worldwide fab capacity utilization rates will hit 87% in June, up from 82.6% in May and 80% in April.

The industry's wafer-processing frontend capacity utilization rate hit bottom at 69% in December for the worldwide chip industry, according to the San Jose-based research firm.

The worldwide IC book-to-bill ratio is expected to hit 1.44 for June, when bookings are forecast at $13.5 billion and billings are at about $10.8 billion, according to VLSI Research.

VLSI Research's preliminary data for May have IC bookings at $11.4 billion and billings at $9.6 billion, yielding a book-to-bill ratio of 1.18 on a three-month average basis. The IC billings represent the average of WSTS sales data for March and April and VLSI Research's estimate for May.

Semiconductor bookings were at $12.9 billion in April, while billings stood at $9.7 billion worldwide, according to VLSI Research. That combination creates a semiconductor book-to-bill of 1.33, which was the highest ratio in the last 24 months.
