But for some reason, the Sioux and Arapaho and the Navaho have not chosen to go that route. " (1) The Native Americans have full rights all over the US. That includes the right to live in any city they want to, join the military, be hired by the government, etc. If the US were, for example, still trying to force Indians to live on reservations (or outside New York City), we'd be have parades, then demonstrations, then riots, then civil unrest, then small scale rebellion, and if it lasted long enough, yes, we'd get suicide bombers here too. Suicide bombing is a human thing, not a Palestinian thing. If the Jews had had the explosives available in WW2 to do it to the Germans they damn sure would have. And their heroes would still be honored today. (For that matter, I saw in a very recent issue of National Geographic that the Germans had "human torpedoes", which were the next thing to a suicide mission, operating against the Allies at Normandy.) (2) The US made an explicit effort to be inclusive with regard to all its minorities. The US wouldn't dream of shooting up a Reservation's police stations in the hope that it would somehow make the natives less restless. Only those who are completely unaware of human nature do that. Back when the US did have Indian problems, they solved those problems by the very effective and time honored technique of retribution through the wholesale slaughter of Indians (innocent and guilty alike). (3) When the US did have an Indian Problem the US had the advantage of outnumbering the Indians by about 50 to 1. In addition, the mainstream US population bred like rabbits back then, and also accepted huge immigration from overseas. In the long term, the Native American Indians didn't have a chance of competing with that sort of population growth. This made the military solution for the Native American problem feasible, in fact cheap and easy. When the US government wanted to impress Indian leaders with the hopelessness of their military situation, they invited them to visit the Great White Father in Washington DC, and thereby discover that there was an infinite supply of whites available to chase them (and their friends and relatives) down and kill them. Israel has no such military solution available to it, partly because the world has advanced in standards since the 19th century, but mostly because they are seriously outnumbered by the Arabs and the rest of the world will step in to stop it. The only wholesale slaughter of ethnic minorities that happen in the world today happen in obscure locations that no one in the first world really cares much about. Israel can't get away with an ethnic cleansing. Keeping the Palestinians on reservations simply is not a workable solution. -- Carl
