The results of this Israeli survey seem to show that most Israelis think Israel is a religious state, as currently constituted:

Also, the fact that Israel has no governing constitution would shoot down your argument that Israel is (fundamentally) more democratic than the US, although I would agree that the parliamentary form of government is more "democratic". Note that "more democratic" does not necessarily mean "better", however. Our founding fathers in the US wanted a republic, not a democracy.
