I'm ticked that they didn't take LSI's offer for what was rumored to be $28 per share a year or two before Philips' offer. I recall some people posting on the VLSI thread that they were happy VLSI didn't sell out for 28 cause they wanted 35. I asked them if they'd rather have $28 per share today guaranteed or hold for God knows how long to get another 7 bucks a share, and then it might not even get there. Sunil Mehta...I remember him, spoke to him several times. He didn't impress me, but did tell me that the stock was severely undervalued at even $8. I asked him if their land and buildings were worth more or less than what they carried on the balance sheet, and he said several dollars per share more. When you added in their cash and subtracted their debt, and added in the value of their fixed assets, the company was worth more than the stock price. But, Stein doinked too many people, and then Beyer left and hurt confidence in the company cause that's the only guy in management that the market had confidence in, and then the bear market for the SOX hit it, and the stock traded as low as 6. Unbelievable, and it brings back bad memories! lol One thing that I learned from my experience with VLSI (and others) is that stocks can trade to ridiculous valuations in the short term simply because of poor market conditions. The parallel to today is that some stocks are trading below cash, below tangible book, and will eventually recover...just like VLSI did. Why? Become of economics and finance. There's no substitution for understanding those two theoretical disciplines during market turmoil such as we are seeing today. Cool heads will prevail. Just don't get blown out on margin before things turn around. It's funny cause I remember seeing you post on SI before...I scanned the VLSI thread today and saw that you used to post there. That must be where I saw you. I'm just curious, how did you end up posting on this thread? With your experience and level head, we are definitely glad to have you here! Do you know Jim Bertonis? I used to communicate with him frequently about VLSI and was just wondering how he is...Also Tom Veale and Linda Kaplan. I met them on the VLSI thread many moons ago.
