I do have to say that while I'm generally in favor of giving out cards for diving, I'd have to question the timing of that one. Unless the incident was really outrageous beyond belief, I don't think a player that is already carrying a card should be carded for diving in the late stages of a tie game. We all know that referees tend to back off and be a little more permissive in these circumstances: a marginal call that might be made in regulation time will often be allowed to pass by in extra time. I think that's a good thing: it lessens the referee's impact on the match and leaves more up to the players. I always appreciate the ref who gives the fellow a dirty look and says "play on". If it's a question of a foul that should be called, by all means call it. If it's a foul that maybe could be called, I'd say let the game go on. I didn't see that one, so I can't comment, but the circumstances seem unfortunate. Would it have made a difference? We will never know, but it surely gives the Italians a good excuse for an epic burst of flamboyant gesturing.
