Companies can and do trade for less than book value. This is particularly true if a substantial portion of the book value is made up of capital assets whose depreciation may not reflect the true decline in their market value.

Book value also changes. It can go down over time.

Please note that I am not suggesting (even in my worst case analysis) a cataclysmic decline to under $5 anytime soon. I am merely suggesting that it could get there. The set of circumstances that would cause that to happen would almost certainly also have an impact on the book value.

The company most like Intel, and its closest (some say only) competitor is presently well below book and continuing down.
